bad photo, great news. Voodoo Yeasted Vegan Donuts.

Portland vegans have been buzzing with anticipation since the start of the new year - word leaked out that Voodoo Doughnuts, Portland's world famous donut shop - where you can get married, learn Swahili, see shows and eat donuts any time of the day, was working on vegan yeasted donuts. Every now and then I'd hear about someone being treated to one of these sweet experiments....alas, they weren't for sale to the public yet.

They totally do.

With the fall of the brief Rise Up yeasted donuts a couple years ago, us poor, deprived Portland vegans were left with Mighty-O imports (at Whole Foods) and Voodoo's cake donuts.  Voodoo's cake donuts have come a long way since their banana-y inception, and now come in (much lighter) banana and new pumpkin based cake with an utterly fun mix of toppings.  I tried a pumpkin based, vanilla iced, chic-o-stick topped one recently and it was great! As for Mighty-O, they're obviously at their awesomest when eaten fresh at the north Seattle location.  The variety there kicks the ass of the hours old glazed that Whole Foods sells here.  Check out this dozen I picked up last year!  Local favorite and wonder Sweetpea Baking Co. has great yeasted donuts on Saturdays, made with love you can taste.  I'm always excited to see what the special donut offering is, in addition to the classic Boston Creme and Glazed.

Onto the bad photo portion of the post: the yeasted donuts are OFFICIALLY AT BOTH VOODOO LOCATIONS.  The entire top shelf of donuts in the glass displays are vegan.  It was raining and I was hurrying to catch an arriving bus and the last of daylight - my apologies on the rushed photo!

A dozen donuts: mostly yeasted.  $10.

Introductory Verdict:
These donuts were procured late in the day.  While the experience of eating a vegan maple bar was amazing, my friends and I realized that the donuts were seemingly fried much earlier in the day, understandably.  The actual donut part was admittedly a bit tough and chewy. They reminded me of a day old Vegan Treats donut I had in NYC last winter.  Being topped with wonderful things like chocolate cookies and peanut butter distracted, and I'm hoping to try a fresh one soon and be blown away.  We'll see how these develop!  It can only get better and better, it's Voodoo! Apparently they even have vegan cock and balls donuts! If they bring out a vegan version of the maple bacon subbed with tempeh bacon, I'll tear with vegan friendly pride.

P.S. I was raised with Dunkin' Donuts (my favorites were the Dunkin Q, blueberry muffin donut and powdered cruller) and to me it's DONUT, not doughnut.  Just so you now.

It's donut for me too :)

We just had Ronald's for the first time in Vegas a couple of weeks ago and are totally hooked. I had never had a vegan donut before, but they are the best donuts ever!

I am so glad vegan donuts are in your neck of the woods now too!

i am jealous of your donuts, yes I am. I have not had a yeasted donut since becoming vegan 8 or 9 years ago. I want one!

I think I am justified in my Jealousy, seeing as MA residents don't have nearly as many vegan-friendly restaurants. I'm going to have visit soon :D

Just tried the yeasted guys this morning. My sprinkly one was super heavy and chewy but the maple was right on. I was hoping to find a jelly in my staff-picked dozen--guess I'll have to shell out full price for that one.

I worked for voodoo doughnuts for a number of years and happen to be vegan. As a vegan i would strongly urge veagns not to eat there. voodoo is owned by 2 guys tres and cat daddy and managed by a guy named lobster. lobster is vegetarian and is the man behind the vegan cake reciepe. witch is just organic(sometimes)white flour, organic sugar, naners, canola oil, h2o, baking powder and salt. the main problem over the years with the batchs have been from the master recipe instead of listing the naners weight it just says add 7 naners. i have never seen 2 bananas weight the same in the years i have worked there. if your bananas are smaller then normal(what is a normal size banana?) your doughnut mix is soupy witch makes the doughnuts flat and causes them to "bubble" on the bottom witch lets in extra fryer oil. i could go on and on about this detail since its the main reason why they always look weird or taste greesy/nasty but seemed i was the only who cared about the vegan doughnuts. the ironic thing about them having a really unrelable recipe for the vegans is thats the only thing voodoo makes from scratch. sadly but true everything (minus flour, sugar, oil for the vegans witch comes from peoples) else comes from a company called bakemark. voodoo buys premade low grade doughnut mixes and frostings for all of their doughnuts. witch is why untill recently they only had the cake doughnuts that they made in house for vegans. i have called bakemark a few times and have been told by four differant customer service reps that the sugar used in all of there product is bleached white sugar. i spent a week researching tracking down bakemarks suppler of sugar to find out if its vegan or not. sadly i learned that the sugar is not vegan. so unless you get them plain all the other vegan doughnuts are not vegan. i told the owners(who both told me they strongly hate vegans because of there picky eating habits and bad attitude) and they laughed at me then told me to not tell anyone. like it was one big joke on the poor vegans. Another vegan problem at voodoo is the fryers where the doughnuts are made. the downtown store as one and the east side one has two. the problem is the fact that the vegans tend to almost always made after the crullers. the crullers have to be the most non vegan doughnut since they are close to 70% egg. when i first started 3 years ago it wasnt uncommon for kitchen workers not to wash mixing bowls untill the end of the shift. witch means the cruller batter would sometimes make it in the vegan mix by really lazy or really busy or really stoned workers. to sum things up voodoo's glaze, chocatle frosting, vanilla frosting and maple are not vegan. the oreo is not vegan chicostick is not vegan it clearly states on the packages at voodoo that it contains milk. the creams and jellys that are used at voodoo are also not vegan. your way better off going to sweetpea on SE 12th and stark they serve real vegan doughnuts on wedesday and saturday.
