Good Gracious Greens

Zelda is thrilled about fresh chard.

As am I....

The downtown PSU farmer's market had it's opening yesterday, and sure as hell I was there. Thank you global warming? but there was sure a lot more produce than the past couple years. Here's what I picked up:

  • Rainbow chard
  • Chinese broccoli
  • Maiitake mushrooms
  • Kale
  • Apple juice - sure some of it is still frozen, and I'm clinging onto the past season, but it's goooood.
  • Thai and True yellow curry paste. This is a local company that makes a variety of sauces, and vegan curry pastes. Not all sauces are vegan, fyi.
  • Dave's Killer Bread - Rockin' Rye (aka the best bread in portland)

Farmers' markets--happy thought! Those show up some time around June in PA. I'll be really interested to see what you do with those maitake mushrooms and the curry paste.

Yay, Farmer's Market! I just got some of that curry paste (the mussaman curry one) at Food Fight last week and made it hoping it would be excellent but... it wasn't. Every time I try to do thai curry at home there's a flavor missing and I just can't put my finger on it. Do you know what it is? I was hoping this one would work out because it didn't call for fish sauce, just said to mix in coconut milk. I guess it's good that we have so many Thai restaurants in Portland so I can get my fix!

I love Farmer's markets. I can't wait to hit up the local ones here, especially once it gets closer to summer!

Cute kitty! Since the move mine has been in hiding and really scaring me because he hasn't eaten for 5 days! Anyway, score at the Farmer's Market!

Yum! I need to give my friends at PSU a heads up about this farmers market - they've never mentioned it to me so maybe they don't know about it ... Or they're trying to keep all of their delicious veggies to themselves! ;)

As for me, I'll keep waiting for Boston's Haymarket with Shaun.Marie!

Oh I can't wait until our market opens on April 19th! It's hard to believe it's that time again.

P.S. I wish my kitties would get excited over greens! Maybe then they wouldn't be such fatties!

Chelsea - I actually made the yellow curry last night - I think my curry itself was pretty flavorful and I know massaman is milder, but I would try adding some garlic and ginger to your pot when you first start.

For mine, I found it a bit on the gentler side, so I added a bit of tamari, chili sauce and fresh basil at the end, and a very small squirt of veg. mushroom oyster sauce to give it a little more flavor.

I wish I had thai basil, but I used 'normal'. I want to make pineapple curry next..

I thought my final product was tasty, and my boyfriend enjoyed it a lot (which was a nice surprise) but it still wasn't as tasty as good ones I've had out, for sure.

good luck!

Holy moley! I wish I could find a farmer's market around here that sells greens that look that delish. Maybe I should move to Portland. I am very envious :o)

go green! I have been eating mounds of asparagus lately. It is delicious. Any tips on how I can prepare it in new exciting ways?

Also, I am coming to portland. Just tell me when I can come. How about Memorial Day weekend? or maybe later in the summer.

OMG I just tried Daves Killer Bread at VegFest here in Seattle last weekend! It was just amazing!! I'm on a quest to get it stocked in one of the local grocery stores so I don't have to drive 100 miles for it.

JFJ - I left a comment on your blog!!

Teddy - I know they sell them at Food Fight itself, but I didn't see them in the online store...yet.

Where is this PSU Farmers market? I am in Seattle too and never heard of it. I will have to seek it out.

That looks like a ridiculous amount of yummy greens!
