Anantomy of a Grocery Trip: Penzey's Spices

First off, thanks for the all shoe feedback!

Because I have a rule that Julie Hasson must be mentioned on my blog at least once every other week, I should get it out of the way that I've wanted to visit Penzey's Spices since she mentioned it recently. (sorry about the big picture of the ham! warning!)
Fortunately, I had an opportunity to go with my friends last weekend via vehicle since it's not quite in Portland itself, and joined in on the spice party.

I usually buy my spices in bulk (Limbo, People's Coop, New Season's) and it was a fun change to buy in jars and bags.

I spent approximately $15, and walked out with the folllowing:
  • whole Nutmeg
  • Indian 'Very Hot' Crushed Red Pepper
  • Zatar
  • Indonesian Korintje Cassia Cinnamon
  • Indonesian White Pepper
  • and Jerk Chicken & Fish Spice (for my sister)
I've actually divided my goods and have a package going out to my sister tomorrow. A way to justify the fun spending!

There were 4 different types of freaking cinnamon! I have Vietnamese Cinnamon at home already and happily picked up the Indonesian after smelling them all.

My friends being all spicy.

Jealous? You can easily purchase online or go to the store nearest you!

I absolutely LOVE Penzey's Spices. There is one near me, and I swear it's the happiest place on earth. I get giddy just THINKING about going there... (Dork.) If you get a chance, I HIGHLY (highly, highly x 1,000) recommend the Sandwich Sprinkle. I use it for homemade croutons & it is absolutely the most perfect combination of spices ever. I have been meaning to get over to Penzey's, and I think I might just do that this weekend, now that you've inspired me!

P.S. Their cinnamons are all amazing. Yum!

You crack me up Jess!

I'm so glad you guys checked out Penzey's. Isn't it a cool store? The spices are so fresh and fragrant.

You got out of there cheaper than I usually do. Next time I'm going with you.

you simply MUST try the FOx Point Seasoning at Penzy's... toss any vegetable with a little olive oil & some Fox Point - and suddenly you are a cooking SUPERSTAR!! If you want to control the salt, try "Sunny Paris" seasoning, which is almost identical to the Fox Point, but without the salt.

Also...don't be afraid of the pork chop seasoning...it is actually a delightful combination of seasonings and smoked salt!! I use it on my vegan/veggie personal chef clients when I need something smoky to replace ham or bacon - like Split Pea Soup. IT would also be great on tomatoes to for a vegan BLT version of a salad. (like Genie's)
