'Tempeh Steak' marinading
I've also cracked open my copy of "Tempting Tempeh" by Emily Clark, which is published by Aduki. Whether you've seen my blog 5 times or 100 times, you have probably noticed how I dig that fermented bean cake. The first recipe I made was the "Tempeh Steaks". The sauce is an easy sesame-asian one, and the mashed potatoes are jazzed up with some wasabi paste. Now, Thomas wasn't having the wasabi addition, so I left that out and added some garlic sea salt. I marinaded the tempeh overnight to make it extra flavorful, and while I wasn't sure about the asian-mashed potatoes vibe, it pulled it off! I'm sure it would be even better with the actual wasabi. It was very 'restaurant food' and remarkably quick to make.

The recipe was supposed to make extra sauce to drizzle, but I threw in some Trader Joe's Chickenless strips to soak it up for Thomas. Garlic Mashed Potates
Thomas took one bite of a chickenless strip and warned me "You are not going to like this". It's true, they're not my thing, and I actually liked the last posts' beefless strips better. I don't see myself buying either of them again, but they are cheaper and similar (possibly just repackaged..) to the Morningstar Farms ones, if you're into that.
Speaking of Morningstar, I recently read that they're taking the egg out of several products, so be on the ingredient-reading lookout! You know, again, if you're into that.
And Portlanders! Sweetpea brunch buffet again this Sunday! I'm hoping to go, as I was unable to last week. Woo!

I was wondering if you would recommend a tempeh recipe/meal to my sis' and I who has never cooked with it before, and has only tried it once. What do you think L. and I will like as newbies? If you have any suggestions that would be great! We were thinking of trying the Spicy Tempeh and Broccoli Rabi recipe in Veganomicon.

Maybe we should do a Los Angeles-Portland exchange program. We L.A. vegans visit you Portland vegans and vice versa! I can think of a bunch of reasons why you could justify a trip to L.A. to try Scoops (and Madeleine Bistro, and Real Food Daily, and M Cafe de Chaya, and Pure Luck, and Vinh Loi Tofu, and vegan Ethiopian food, and...). ;)
mustardseed- I don't think there are many hard-to-find ingredients - but you can scroll through the seemingly entire book if you click on the link I gave~
lk - I really like the tempeh pasta in veganomican! Good choice. Personally, I think tempeh took some taste adjusting because of the texture. My all-time favorite tempeh recipe, and the first one I truly dug was tempeh bacon. I would recommend that first, thinly sliced & marinaded.

I still don't trust Morningstar Farms... what if the egg is still lurking on their product/production line? Sketchy. But that's just me, haha.
if morningstar makes their chik patties and corndogs vegan, i will make them my best friend...
anyways, i remember my first try of tempeh. i worked at a natural food store deli and we had tempeh salad (like chicken salad). i didn't like the nutty taste, but since i knew it was good for me i would take samples every once and awhile and i grew to like it.
I am a late convert to tempeh, but your dishes certainly provide lots of options for how to eat it!
I would be so thrilled if they took the egg out of the corn dogs, 'cause sometimes a girl just wants corn dogs, dammit!
I'm totally drooling. I've been in a tempeh phase lately. I've always loved it, but I tended to forget about it...relying heavily on tofu and seitan instead. But I got a cravin' for tempeh a few weeks ago and I can't seem to get enough of it...I should get that book.
And great news on the Morningstar front. I'm definitely into the faux meats. They're my only processed food weakness. Well, also vegan cheese...
