*Update-for more information and photos, please see our Stumptown Vegan's Initial Review on Papa G's Organic Vegan Deli here. Thanks!*
I go on and on about my life in Portland, and the food in Portland, so what's a little more on the topic? Sure, I sound like a broken record, but anyone who's sick of reading about this topic should know not to read my blog by now~
Today was the first official day for Papa G's, a vegan organic deli that just happened to open up in my very immediate neighbor in SE. They previously had a hot food bar in the now-closed Daily Grind grocery, and have packaged flavored tofus in a few stores around the city.
We picked up some BBQ Tofu, Mashed Yams, Quinoa with Tofu, Roasted Potatoes with Savory Ginger Gravy and a piece of cornbread for dinner tonight.
Honestly, I liked everything more than I thought I would, with the exception of the gravy since the ginger-vibe wasn't really my thing. It was still tasty, besides that. Bottom line, freaking Portland! I look forward to trying their rotating hot bar options, breakfast buffet, hot soups and more - and taking my own to-go containers.

Potatoes and gravy! Yum!
An organic vegan deli in your neighborhood - that's so cool.
YUM!! How cool you have so many great vegan dining options..
Portland = Vegan Nirvana.
You lucky, lucky, LUCKY girl ;)
I am really jealous! That all sounds amazing--minus the ginger gravy, as that's not really my thing, either! Those pictures are certainly drool-worthy.
It all looks so good! I will have to check it out. I'll try to remember to bring contaners, but are those ones at least biodegradable? They look kind of like it from what I can see. I've had their tofu once before, it was so delicious.
yep. biodegradable containerage. papa g told me hisself. i had a delicious sampler there yesterday along with the crunchiest tastiest salad. tastiest dressing I've had in a long time, "the green stuff", came highly recommended and was so so tasty. i'm going back for more today.
In addition to all the great eats, they offer free wireless internet, too.
Long live Papa G's!
I think it's kinda cool that you are the Portland poster girl of the blogosphere - makes me feel like I know the city intimately, despite the fact that I've never been there! :)
oh portland sounds marvelous! i think i will fall in love with it come may!
thanks for the review!
Just in case you weren't aware of this: you, living where you live, with all that food, it's not fair.
And YOU must be getting tired of me leaving comments about how much I wish I lived in Portland.
i never tired of hearing you talk about Portland...please keep going. I've never been there, but I know I will someday and it will be one of the best trips ever!
You live in an amazing city and are obviously happy about it. I enjoy reading about all that is available there. And then I dream....
Thanks guys!
Have no fear, for the overwhelmed you can still enter many restaurants without an actual vegan option ; )
But then, there are something like 20+ veg-specific places...
Doorman is right, their containers are biodegradable.
And this wasn't a review, just observing for now. Review to come after they're open for a bit more on Stumptown Vegans..
lucky can't even BEGIN to describe what you are, living in such a vegan paradise - so much delicious food available to you!
I am so proud of you. Your food is delicious.
Breakfast Buffet? Wow that is excellent! I am glad they finally opened since I have plans to meet a friend there next week! I was getting a little concerned with the delays.
You know, this has nothing to do with your post, but I marinated tempeh in the VwaV italian tofu marinade (but subbed leftover tomato sauce + rice wine vinegar for the white wine), cut into squares to make "meatballs", baked 'em, and totally thought of you the whole time.
(they were dee-lish, by the way).
(I'm *still* getting used to the neti pot and I've used it half a dozen times. I guess it's an acquired taste :) ).
Oh man, I just need to move there already.
Your posts make me want to get on Craig's List ASAP to find job & apartment. Portland sounds so awesome.
Every time I read your Portland food entries, I get so jealous. I can't say it enough- Boston doesn't have anything! Ah, some day. Some day.
Erica - That reminds me of me, too! I must restock on tempeh. I miss it.
Good food, TO EXPENSIVE.
Whenever I voyaged over to
SE P-Town, the Daily Grind Papa G's was always my dining objective, mainly because of their
small but value-packed salad bar.
There will be no justice until
every 'hood has a vegan joint like
this.
Tomorrow, I am scoping out their
new digs, and digging me up some raw joy!
Wow! I got a 32 oz. bowl of organic chili there for $2 and a nice salad of organic greens and seaweed with homemade dressing (vegan ranch)($4)! Where r u gonna find that anywhere??? I personally don't think the spot is overpriced for organic food (I overheard the owner say all their produce, grains, sweeteners, pasta, and even spices are OG! I guess u just have 2 know how to order at the place if your on a budget!? There are so many different options it just seems to take time figuring out the system, I've had years of prior training at the former DG. Although it is more expensive than there, it's hard to put a price on the cleanliness, quality, and consciousness. They even sell organic cashew milk sweetened with organic maple syrup, yeah!! Keep up the good work!!
It's great to hear what everyone thinks! I'm pretty darn ecstatic to see this place supported and have an organic vegan deli within a minute of my dwellings!

OMG, isn't the BBQ just the BEST?
