Vegan Crepes, Saucy Romanesco Chickpeas

Oh, did I mention crepes in my last post?

This is what happened Wednesday night when I tried making the PPK/Veganomican test kitchen savory desert style crepes.
The heat was too high, and I had to get the hang of moving my arm to spread the batter and delicately using my spatula(s).
Onto last night's more patient attempt..

Tah dah! It's surely not that circular, but it one of 5 or 6 I made, with leftover batter in the fridge.

Behold.... (yeah, I'm proud!)

Filled with a warmed chocoreale hazelnut spread, and topped with organic strawberries and powdered sugar. Chocoreale ain't no nutella, but it's close enough for something I ordered from Europe. Man, various types of nutella-ish spreads were on every table in my Dutch dining hall when I was abroad (along with sprinkles and peanut butter).

The spatula artillery:
Also made Wednesday evening, test kitchen Saucy Chickpeas, Romanesco Style. Fire roasty and spicy and herby and gooooooood.

Simmering in my new, not to mention first, dutch oven pot <3

Saucy chickpeas, served with a rice pilaf.

Oh, that's a familiar sight to me, believe me--I have screwed up many a crepe in my day. Your end result looks delicious though.

Shudder! Wet things in sinks make me want to retch. The final results are impressive, though. Pat on the back!

Mmm….your (second attempt!) crepes look super yummy! I didn’t know you could buy vegan Nutella type stuff… I am not sure I wanted to know…it’s far too addictive!! And I see it comes from the UK..uh oh! I know I will have to track some down when I am back in Scotland!!

Sadly, crepes remind me of being gluten free a little too much. That's funny that you mentioned Nutella the other day, and here it is (sort of). I'm glad I never got into that stuff, I would probably be an addict if I had.

The saucy chickpeas look awesome. Oh, how I want to eat them...

Well the successful crepes sure look delicious! I was actually thinking about making some crepes for breakfast tomorrow but I'm hesitant because I never have before..

I don't know why, but I never have any trouble with crepes. I make the VwaV ones often. The first time I had that recipe, I almost cried! I grew up eating crepes, and I was so glad to eat them again.

Nice to hear something more or less good about that chocoreale stuff. I've been wondering. In my pre-vegan days, I used to always bring nutella back from europe with me. Of course, now you can find it any where.

I just got a dutch oven too! fun!

i love crepes!! I don't make them enough. they bring back bad memories of making hundreds of them once at a restaurant i worked in...it caused nerve damage in the tip of one of my fingers for weeks and weeks and weeks..at least it went away eventually. all looks good as usual!

Mmmm... I thought even the messed up ones looked good :-). I like to use a long thin spatula--like a frosting spreader to turn my crepes, for me it works better than a spatula.

I love crepes. They're an old standby in our ktichen. You always have to sacrifice a few to the crepe gods, first.

Every time I try to order that chocolate hazlenut spread, it's always sold out. I do kind of miss nutella--that's maybe the only non-vegan thing I miss--but even pre-vegan I rarely ate it since it contains transfats.

Those looks awesome!.. and it's great you posted your screw ups.. I certainly have my own screw ups.. and it helps to have a sense of humor about them.

Your crepes, chickpeas, and the new dutch oven are beautiful!

When is that cookbook going to appear?

Hi ATX - I think it's now being planned for winter 2007/2008.

Jess, don't worry about the cringing. It's a weird affliction/pet peeve I have. I can't even stand a wet sponge in the sink. It has to be rung out and sitting on the edge.

oops tommymakestapes was me on the bf's name..

Taylor - I am terrified of our sponge at work, but that's a different story.

Ooh shiny new cookwear! I so need to get myself a Dutch oven...as well as new pots and pans in general.

I have never eaten Nutella-type substances, but I suspect I would probably enjoy them. Stuffed inside a crepe with some strawberries sounds like some sort of fancy dream. Crepes have yet to make an appearance in my kitchen, but doggone it, you've inspired me.

I haven't had a bad crepe experience yet, but, then, again, I haven't used my cast-iron for them since I've gotten it! Yours look great. How frustrating it must have been at first.

Mmm, your crepes look delicious. When I went to Amsterdam last November, I brought back some carob hazelnut spread, which was similar to nutella, but vegan and so much better!
