thanksgiving, schmanksgiving!

Slice of Apple Cranberry Crumb Pie, spritz of Soyatoo

Compassionate Cooks recipes for Pumpkin Pie - made with my CSA sugar pumpkin.

Apple Cranberry Crumb Pie (I am so very proud).

Vegan with a Vengeance oval biscuits, poppy and sesame squirrels

I picked up a tofurkey on sale at People's Coop in SE Portland. I had tried it last year, and enjoyed it - it wasn't horrible, but I don't think our experience will warrant another purchase AT ALL.

Ours marinaded (ala Webly) for 2 days in sparkling apple cider, braggs, garlic, thyme and olive oil.

Pre-roasting, with chopped shallots and red kuri squash, topped with freshly ground peppercorns.

Roasted!

Sliced, showing you it's damn bland stuffing.

Thomas made Bryanna Clark Grogan's maple cranberry sauce - my absolute favorite dish of our feast..

Roasted Garlic and more garlic yukon gold potatoes.

More biscuits! Crescent rolls and squirrel shaped.

Balsamic Glazed Cremini Mushrooms (these were huge)

Steamed fresh green beans with sea salt.

Yup - another Sweet Potato Pie Casserole, topped with a cinnamon stick. I tried to slightly differ the design on this one.

Feasting plate.

This toasted ciabatta- baby spinach - cranberry sauce, stufing and tofurkey sandwich was both the day after's leftover dinner and this morning's breakfast. There are still two big ole tofurkey slices (chunks) left, and we're not fighting over them..

Yum! So jealous! I didn't celebrate Thanksgiving this year. Kind of missed going all out in the kitchen, but my ass and abs thank me.

Wow--that's a lot of food! It all sounds wonderful. Too bad your tofurky stuffing was bland...

wow, I love all these great pictures... At least you made enough millions of things that you didn't have to rely soley on the tofurkey. I agree with you... not really worth repeating.

what a lovley thanksgiving, schmanksgiving feast. All the pictures make me wish I was eating it all now. our local news had a story on tofurky and the newscasters didn't even try to pretend that it might be good..and basically said vegan/vegetarians were crazy. what do they know.

Now that's the way to do thanksgiving! Everything looks amazing (as usual! :-)
Pity about the tofurkey - I guess it kinda goes to show that the yummiest things are always the ones you make yourself!

This is the first time I've seen tofurkey. For some reason I used to think they modeled it in the shape of a turkey...

I've never had tofurkey either. I think that sandwich looks really really good! And I still love the apple cranberry pie.

Holy Moses, those green beans are larger than life! Sorry about your Tofurkey, but my tastebuds agree, I never liked it at all.

I'm pleased to report the (tempeh) sausage crumbles were amazing with my thanksgiving meal, even my folks liked them. Now I'm out of tempeh - a situation which must be rememdied ASAP.

(oh, and I'm glad I didn't eat the Blossoming Lotus food! I'm really partial to Proper Eats anyway).

Wow. just, wow. I won't start trying to pick my favorite, since everything looks good (even tofurky looks good in pictures!!). I made your sweet potatoes for Thxgvng- maybe I'll get around to blogging about that whole meal/holiday one of these days!

Wow! Next year I think all the Portlanders should have Thanksgiving on different days and we can do an eating tour of eachother's homes! Yum! I love the squirrel biscuits! I have a squirrel cookie cutter, so I'll have to bust it out next time I make them. I know what you mean about not caring for the Tofurky. We had some at the store recently and I think they upped the gluten content, because it feels like you ate lead after you get done eating it, it's so dense, in a bad way.

I would like to rewind and just make everything here for my Thanksgiving meal.

I had an Unturkey last year, which besides being a lot less dry than the Tofurkey we had this year, came with a really great stuffing. I should have stuck with that again, but wanted to try the "original." Jess, where did you get the recipe for the apple cranberry crumb pie? It looks amazing!

Yeah, I'm officially not an tofurkey fan. Thanks for the suggestion on the unturkey, Summer, but I think I will either do a homemade tofu-turkey next year or a tempeh dish.
For the pie, I used this recipe: http://www.taunton.com/finecooking/apples/fba14.asp
I left out the ginger and added cinnamon and nutmeg (topping and filling) and some lemon juice in the filling, and since I was an apple or 2 short I added a big handful of cranberries - and I'm really glad I did. I will note that you can certainly cut down the sugar in the pie, I wish I had used half the amount.
Kris - I think your portland t-days idea is fantasic! It's just the type of meal you want to share. I used an organic whole wheat pie crust, since I don't have a decent pie pan. Which is sad.

Just wanted you to know that my bf's sister made this last weekend and it was really good. I know you didn't like it very much but I really appreciate the post. You saved my (belated) Christmas!
