Midweek Munchies product reviews and Make-Shift chinese take out

Fried tofu squares with black sesame seeds (as you can tell I have them in the house). The tofu was drained and then fried in rice bran oil and crushed garlic - I cooked it till crispy on all 4 sides and then added soy vay chinese marinade and szechuan sauce and let it sort of carmelize.
I also made fried rice - first I cooked a lot of crushed garlic in rice bran oil in my wok, then I added some crushed red pepper, diced carrots and broccoli. I let this cook a few minutes with the lid on. I then added chopped red pepper, almonds and zucchini, cooked a few more minutes without the lid, added cooked white rice (leftovers are per-fect for this) and mixed the rice in. Add a splash of toasted sesame oil, some soy sauce and voila - fried rice.

Not much food shopping due to my trip, but we *needed* olive oil, so I picked up some at Trader Joe's. I'd sampled this Australian olive oil from a friend previously, and the taste stuck with me. It has almost a smoky aftertaste, and I really like it. New Seasons had a tasting of veggie burgers this weekend, and I sampled the new Black Bean Chipotle gardenburgers - and yes they're vegan! To note, I don't like many prepackaged veggie burgers, I like my burgers full of veggies - like Sunshine burgers, or better yet, homemade. These have a delicious spicy black bean flavor that I couldn't pass up at 2 for $5 along with a dollar off coupon. It's nice to have something easy for a quick meal come summer heat.
Lastly, I have the third corporate product placement of the day - Odwalla soymilk. I was sucked in by a sale and curiousity - this half galloon cost me a dollar. It's strangely a very frothy soymilk, nice vanilla flavor indeed. Nothing so special that I'd seek out to buy again, but enjoyable. I felt slightly dirty buying the Odwalla knowing it's owned by Coca-Cola now. I also have negative feelings towards Odwalla, as I beleive they bought out my old beloved, Fresh Samantha. The rest of the week will be focused on eating the fresh food that my boyfriend won't, so there may or may not be not so glorious stir fries soon. Onto packing!

Hmm Megan, I'll blame the sauce and the natural light.

I like those Black Bean burgers, we just got them again. We grilled them on Monday, but I prefer them on the stove in oil. Great post, once again!

Your tofu always looks so good. I don't know what it is. But seriously, come make me tofu? I'll give you cookies!

"soy vay chinese marinade and szechuan sauce" - what is this and where can I get me some! I really like szechuan and your tofu looks fantastic!
I can only get Gardenburgers when I go on my cross-border shopping sprees. I've never had that flavour. Sounds yummy!

Leslie - Rad recent post! Basically it epitomized my fears of making falafel from scratch : ( But I really like that you posted it, it's so real!

Chris - Give it a try! I only wanted to dish out the cash for a small bottle of olive oil due to, being broke, and this was a dollar more than the basic TJ's olive oil. I do like it.

Vegancore- I've finally come around to almost liking seitan, so maybe you shall enjoy tofu one day? Actually I'm coming to King of Prussia in September for a conference for a few days, though I forget the layout of PA completely...

Carrie - Hello! Soy Vay chinese marinade is found at many grocery stores and I used to find it at Trader Joe's. The szechuan sauce is made of House of Tsang and has a dragon on the label.

Take a look at that direct link for a post of feedback from yesterday comments!

Also, great MwM...would you believe that the stores here do NOT sell Gardenburger products!!! I have to travel over an hour to get them! SO I don't get them often! Sheesh!

your fab tofu pic makes me want to give it another try, and it looks perfectly brown too. wow, black sesame seeds & did i see an almond? looking forward to stir-frys...with tofu?! :o)

I also thought the tofu looked like that rare salmon they put on salads and the like at fancy restaurants. My tofu never looks that good, but I don’t do the rinse/drain thing that so many people seem to think is essential. Maybe I should give that a try? I love Soy Vay sauces, I use the teriyaki flavor when I make stir fry, yum!

I had no idea Odwalla made soymilk, very interesting. I hear you on the frozen veggie burgers--I tend to only like bean-based ones (not soy), so this looks great to me!

Whee. I'm excited about those Gardenburgers. I'm partial to a grain/bean-based burger (as opposed to the soy-patties), but I usually go with Boca for my "cheap choice" vegan veggie burger. These could be a great alternative. I liked Gardenburgers quite a bit when I was lacto-/ovo-vegetarian :)

And I would have never guessed Odwalla was owned by Coke! I do like their Odwalla bars and apple juice (but rarely ever buy the stuff because it's so expensive around here).

hey Jess, sorry for posting yet another message in order to communicate. I am Tacita and I am the one who put up the Vegan Club. It is still a baby project right now! I can just tell you than me and a few other people who are helping me out, are vegan interested in spreading the word about this life choice. We are not acting on the behalf of a company or any organization. We are totally independent. There is no other purpose than to help vegan come together and others to understand better what being vegan is all about.
