Tempeh in Action

Tempeh bacon, Romaine Lettuce, Avocado, Vegenaise, Roasted Red Peppers..and a side of spicy fries. We had homemade Wild Berry iced tea as well.

Tempeh bacon, approximated: (based on vwav and vegweb recipes)
4 tablespoons braggs/tamari/soy sauce, what have you
one clove crushed or thinly sliced garlic
1/2-1 tablespoon maple syrup
1/8-1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke
1.5 teaspoons tomato paste

Rub garlic onto sliced tempeh and leave on top. Stir all together remaining ingredients and spoon onto one pack's worth of thinly sliced tempeh, marinade at least a couple hours. I've had pieces marinading in the fridge for over a week, no problem, super flavorful. I cook them on medium - high heat well on each side in earth balance or light plain oil.

My god that looks good. I heart tempeh bacon. Tempeh in general, really. And those are some good-looking fries. Mine never get that brown and roasty. What's your secret?

Tempeh bacon, and batter fried tempeh are really the only two ways I eat tempeh - and batter fried I've had three or four times in the past year and a half as a wicked treat. I've been meaning to try the cornmeal crusted tempeh from the candle cafe book..maybe it'll be a third way I like it.

As for the fries, really I just like really crispy food, so I tend to tempt the line of burning.

Could you explain how you do the tempeh bacon? I'd love to try it. :) Your sandwiches look delicious.

I edited to include my hybrid of two recipes.

I have yet to find any tempeh since moving here to Idaho. Sounds good, though.

I love tempeh in a stir-fry, and I'm working on a recipe of grilled tempeh (that definitely is better when it's steamed first) with a chili-lime sauce that so far is pretty good.

Danielle - I am curious to hear about this recipe. I learned the hard way that tempeh should be steamed before grilling with some wierd bbq tempeh this summer.
