Yo MoFos!

You heard me right. Hey MoFos!
Odds are high that nearly everyone reading this blog besides my sister knows what VeganMoFo is, but if not, check out Isa's PPK blog post here. Jenny! I don't have as much internet access lately as I crave, but I will try to post daily, at least on weekdays.

I'm actually posting right now from the San Jose airport on my way back to Portland, so this will be a short post. I will try to give my future posts themes, and today's is "I miss my kitchen!". I've eaten well enough on my business trip, but going through my flickr photosteam earlier I saw this meal below and thought - dammit I want a homecooked meal!

Flax spaghetti with homemade purple basil marinara, navy beans, garlic bread and a sprinkle of homemade almond 'parmesan'.

I didn't have any great tofu while in Monterey, CA. There were two attempts - the tofu tacos below and Pad Kee Mow at a veg-friendly Thai restaurant earlier today. The tofu tacos were on the bland side and called for hot sauce, and the Thai tofu tasted a bit 'old'. Not inedible, but it's a certifiably sad sight when my plate is cleared with fried tofu on it.

The tofu tacos are a veganized entree from Hula's Hawaian restaurant in Monterey. They had a sign in the window mentioning "vegan and vegetarian" specials, but this option had to have cheese, slaw and aioli removed. There was another actual vegan option that was tempting me - a tofu bowl with plantains, beans and rice but it had a green curry cilantro sauce, and cilantro is sorta my enough. Really my enemy. I can only handle it when the flavor is melded in Indian food or some salsas, and that's never a guarantee for consumption.

Seasoned tofu soft tacos with rice and beans.

So as I was saying, if I have it in me, I'm cooking up some actual food tonight! Most likely I'll either fall asleep or grab take out, but I did bring back creminis, portabellas and japanese eggplant from the downtown Monterey farmer's market and they want to be cooked! I'm thinking early fall grilling.

Monterey is beautiful, but it's certainly not a haven for veganism. When I was there, I found a little restaurant on the pier that was happy to make me a to-go order of a veganized rice and veggie dish that I ate alongside a different vendor's amazing bread. I hope your kitchen is welcoming when you return!

I hear ya on the travel food. I almost always manage to be fed but it can be lack luster. Then I just start craving my kitchen.
My husband also harbors a deep hatred of parsley & cilantro, he probably wouldn't have touched that with someone elses 5ft pole.

It's no wonder that spaghetti dish made you want some home cooked meals, it looks way too good!

Hope you had a lovely reunion with your kitchen :)

i always miss my kitchen when I travel, even when the food is great. I forgot that Hula's has a spot in Monterery, they have one in Santa Cruz too. I always get the jungle bowl (the one you mentioned), and I just get the sauces on the side so that i can moderate the intensity. It's actually really really good. The tacos, as I recall, are just so-so. I can see from your picture that it's just as dark in both spots though. Turn up the lights, folks! anyhow... welcome back home.

I love to travel, too, but I always miss simple dishes at home.
