Anatomy of a Food Shopping Trip: Grocery Outlet

grocery outlet

Something fun during the Farmer's Market (except People's small weekly market) off season - an excursion to Grocery Outlet (opening soon in the Hollywood area) with the Shiz this past weekend, spent $18ish:

Reynolds Foil Extra Large Baking cups 50 cents
Santa Cruz Organic Raspberry Applesauce $1.29
Soy Delicious Fruit Sweetened Pints - 2 @ $1.49 each (one raspberry, one chocolate almond)
Wildwood Vanilla Soy Yogurt 99 cents
Lightlife Meatballs - 2 @ $1.49 each*
Terra Strips and Blues BBQ chips $1.99
Silk Mocha 99 cents
Kashi Go Lean Crunch $1.79
Flax & Fiber Crunch $1.99
Organic Eggless Egg Noodles 99 cents

I usually go to Trader Joe's and Limbo a couple times a month in the winter, but I was a sucker for the novelty items. The meatballs, by the way...suck. Thomas and I both did not like them. We'll see who I can pawn them off on! I am most excited about the cheap yogurt and applesauce, especially since becoming a big Wildwood fan at the PPK Gathering.

Anywhoo, here's a classic dinner meal from week...

Grilled Italian tofu, cremini mushrooms, baby spinach and chickpeas sprinkled with nutritional yeast and sea salt.

Do you know if Grocery Outlet is going into that building that they're working on by the Wamu? Someone told us it was going to be a Whole Foods. Hmm..

Oh, I just looked it up, it's going in the Value Village spot. I didn't even realize they were closing/had closed.

The grilled tofu looks unbelievable! Is that recipe from somewhere specific, or one of your own making??

I can't believe those prices! Go Lean here is at least $4-$5 a box and the ice cream...$5 easy. Italian grilled tofu looks amazing!

You are sure lucky to live in Portland! The stuff you have pictured from the Grocery Outlet is much costlier where I live than where you do apparently. I would have been looking at close to $30 for all that stuff.

Oh, and your Grilled Italian Tofu looks amazing.

Vicki - yes the flax and fiber is a cereal : )

xgreyoutx - The tofu is marinaded based on the recipe in Vegan with a Vengeance and also in Veganomicon. It's basically garlic, dried herbs, olive oil, tamari/braggs/soy sauce, lemon juice, wine and balsamic vinegar. I grilled it on my cast iron grill.

hehe...the shiz....
anyways, yeah, y'all should definitely check out your local Grocery Outlet (check their website to see if there's one near you, on my trip to the Redwoods i wanted so badly to stop at the Grocery Outlets i went past...but, alas, my friends aren't as excited about grocery outlets as i am).....

I am jealous of those prices! The only store by me that carries all that stuff is Whole Foods... sigh. And I hate all Lightlife stuff, it's just icky. I'm not big on the fake meats, but the only stuff I will eat is the Nate's vegan meatballs (TJ's sells them under their own brand). Even my omni bf eats them, they're that good! And I too am lamenting that I can't find the Vitasoy chocolate peppermint... all that's left on the shelves is the holly nog =P
