Another Farmer's Market Saturday..

This morning Michelle of The Spice Must Flow and I visited the downtown farmer's market - something of a lovely routine for us. I love going anyway, and although I'm flying out this Thursday night for my trip, I still need to eat the next few days, wanted to support the market, see my friend and pick up a couple 'gifts' to bring back with me. Fortunately, my brother will definitely not read this beforehand. As always, I'm glad I went, and this morning - it snowed!! It rarely actually 'snows' in Portland - it was only for a bit, but I practically jumped around with happiness.

Troutdale sprouts (aka brussels) $2.50/lb
Romanesco! $1/lb
Bell peppers $2.50/lb
Blueberry fruit spread $4
Mixed dried beans $1.50/lb (cranberry, pinto....2 or 3 others)
Bag of purple garlic $3
1 lb of roasted hazelnuts $8
just over 1/2 lb of 'soaked' roasted hazelnuts $5

Am I ridiculous to bring a bag of garlic with me cross country to my siblings? Does that really need to be answered? Tomorrow I'm picking up my favorite Strawberry Mango jam from
Jam on Hawthorne as well.
Happy last day of VeganMoFo! (which means my rent is due...)

Is the romanesco that really gnarly looking thing that looks like it should grow underwater? I hope you blog with what you do with that.

You buy as much garlic as we do.

Hope your trip is wonderful!

Looks like you came home with yet another delicious, plentiful bounty of foods from the Farmer's Market! I've only tried romanesco once, and I vowed never to try it again - I was NOT keen on the flavor or texture at all :0P

I have never headr of Romanesco. It's the weirdest looking thing ever. It does look like it should be growing underwater.

Cant wait to see what you do with it!

i had so much fun yesterday!!! you=awesome, you + snow = super awesome! you totally DID jump around with happiness!

you should really check out the goodwill at grand, a little north of division (mill?) for winter coats. i saw a lot! and i went to the bins yesterday, too, and almost picked one up for you (it was this mauve color -- kinda cute!), but then i was worried you wouldn't like it!

(p.s. the link for my site is "spicemustflow.blogspot.com" cause "thespicemustflow.blogspot.com" was taken!)

You're not ridiculous for bringing garlic with you. It's just a great way to ward off any vampires. ;)

What is that contraption veggie?

Gifts of garlic are *never* ridiculous!

Hey guys! Yes, the romanesco is the green creature of a vegetable. It tastes similar to broccoli stalk crossed with cauliflower, go figure.

Veggiegirl - I'm sorry you didn't like it! The texture is a bit interesting because of the shape, but really I think it's pretty calm, like cauliflower. Sorry about the bad experience!

I haven't done anything exciting with mine yet, just eaten it raw with a dip, and put it into a minestrone and red wine soup last night.

We'll see if I have time before my trip to do something neat - I will probably just roast it...maybe with cornmeal?
