Vegan Cookie Day, in Photos

What are all these peoples standing around for?
The Vegan Cookie Tasting at the Herbivore Store!

I woke up early Saturday to start baking, not a bad way to start a weekend! I ended up baking two dozen chocolate chocolate hazelnut chip and peanut ginger sesame from the upcoming Veganomican that I go on about, and there were at least 8 other types of cookies there as well - including TONS of yummy classic and variations of chocolate chip. Personally, I only got to try a piece of the mint chocolate chip from the Vegan Fusion cookbook, and I'm impressed.

The crowd was immense, and other than running out of cookies within oh, 20-30 minutes, I'd call it a success. Next time, I'm sure they'll be at least 4 times as many cookies! Hopefully more of Joanna's oatmeal creme pies, which I didn't get a chance to try.
In light of a write up in the Willamette Week basically saying there wasn't even a point to a vegan cookie contest, since they shouldn't even be called cookies - the showing of cookie eaters was beautiful. Go pdx vegans (and vegan cookie eaters)~

The main cookie table.

Sweetpea bakery pecan sandies. I *really* wanted to try these too.

So many cookies a second table was set up! My cookies were on the right.

And going....

And going.................................

And almost gone!

Living Harvest donated some Hemp Milk. I'm quite a fan of these, at least when there's a sale.
So light and creamy - definitely check them out if you get a chance.

Man, I sooo wish I had been there! They all look awesome and yummy. But that idiot who did that write up in the paper....how do newspaper people get away with being so negative? Imagine if he were writing the same kind of article on a particular ethnic group holding an event, the outcry would be enormous! But I guess vegans must have a great big bullseye on their backs and exist only to give idiots with three brain cells something to make fun of.

Wow, that's my fantasy come to life - except I wasn't there. :(

No point to a vegan cookie contest? Hogwash, they usually taste better than not vegan cookies.

Everything looks great and what a turnout! I'm so jealous of the Portland folks. We have nothing like that here.

oH MY gOD, I can't beleive that horrid WW write up. What is wrong with people? What an ignorant jerk. If he ever had gotten over himself long enough to taste a vegan cookie, especially ones as fine as those, he would find himself eating his words, which probably don't taste quite as good.

Yum Yum Yum. Oh boy, how did you manage to not stuff yourself silly. Wish it happened here!!

That's my kind of day, cookies everywhere. Someone should have invited the ignorant author of that newspaper write up. Congratulations on getting your goodies in that event.

How cool! I wish I could go to a cookie tasting contest, vegan or otherwise!

Wow. For a second when I was reading your first paragraph, I thought you said you made all the 8 different types of cookies, and I was like HOW do you do that in one morning??

Ack, everything looks so good, and the very idea of a cookie tasting is so awesome. I love Portland, I really really do.

And you just reminded me- that hemp milk is on sale at my coop this month! Better grab it before it jumps back up to $4 a carton!

That article boiled my blood, by the way. I know the author was trying to be all provocative and controversial, but starting an article about vegan cookies by talking about hitler? Come ON.
My favorite line is this, though: "Free vegan cookies will be handed out, which every undecided eater should sample—there’s no better tool for recruiting carnivores."
He is SO wrong. All that cholesterol must be clogging his brain!

Great pics Jess! Since we really didn't get a chance to taste them, I suggest we make them again, have a cookie party and eat them all.

Judging by the crowd that was there, vegan cookies rule!

That's it. I'm moving to Portland.

Darn, I moved away from Portland 27 years to soon. lol What fun that must have been. To bad the dope who wrote the article has no common sense or taste buds.

Oh, I just bought chocolate hemp milk. Can't wait to try it!

i wish i lived there... Portland is such a cool city and this just confirmed what i already know.

And Jess... for the record, as a long-time journalist, i'm horrified and embarrassed by that story. Very sad, but pretty telling for how some writers work... trying to be cutesy, coy and controversial. It sells...

Hey Jess,

I made more pecan sandies, and I'm dropping some at Food Fight tomorrow for you to try since you didn't get to have any. Swing by and pick them up when you have time. I actually think they are better this time around anyway. Thanks for the mention! Those tarts you and Webly made look amazing.

Oh...I am so jealous (of all who got to taste, and of you for having such a veg community!). I couldn't give vegan cookies away in Philly regardless oh how good they look.

I love Living Harvest Hemp Milk, but agree with you...kinda spendy.

Awesome cookies - wish I was there!

Hey Lisa,

Sadly I think I missed the chance to try them at Food Fight! I swung by tonight but the girl helping out didn't know about it. I'm sure someone enjoyed them, though!

Thanks so much for the offer - I may try to email you this as well, since I don't think you'll be checking here.

Thanks for all you do,

jd
