Lunch at work

Lunch from the India Chaat House - vegan-friendly food carts are a definitely plus of working downtown. The Chaat house is all-vegetarian and vegan.

The $5.00 lunch special feeds me extremely well for two days of lunch.
Naan, Basmati rice, a side of amazing hot sauce, Darl Tarka and Channa Masala. There was a double portion of Darl Tarka to sub for a vegetarian dish in the special line up. This place is so freaking good!!

Holy crap! I would sell my soul to get that meal for $5. Or for conveniently located Indian food in general. Man, I want Indian good sooooo bad now.

You got all of that food for $5??!! Holy doodle, that's freakin' awesome! It looks really, really, really, really good.

That looks amazing. You can only get all that for five bucks by making it at home - yourself. As for that cart, I'd be in heaven if there was three carts for me: one just like this, a falafel cart and a soy ice cream cart. Do they have all that in POrtland? I am seriously contemplating moving there.

I'd double check with them about the Naan... by definition Naan contains eggs. those look a lot like paratha, which (sans ghee) are usually vegan, but if it is naan, you mighta been had.

WOW! I am soo jealous! All of that for five bucks is a frickin' steal!

Leslie-I'll move to Portland w/ you!

I was TOTALLY going to go there yesterday too!!
I have to go out to eat to lunch today and was thinking to try Veganopolis soup today...or I could just get Chaat House again....hmmm. Wanna do lunch?

I can't believe all the vegan-friendly things I keep hearing about in Portland. I am THIS CLOSE (fingers almost squeezed together) to emigrating. Though, for access to an awesome $5 lunch everyday, I think I would gain much weight and have to pay for health care.

looks so yummy. I wish I had a cheap place like that near by! There are lots of Indian places, but not so many that cheap.

To Anonymous - The naan has been asked about, and the establishment is extremely familiar with veganism. I have no worries regarding this. I honestly trust the cart.

Basically, I highly recommend this cart to anyone visiting or in PDX.

Leslie - I've been too nervous to try Indian food at home (yet). There is a falafel cart on the PSU/farmer's market blocks, and many excellent Lebanese restaurants around town. No soy cream cart, but plenty of vegan dessert options all around. Blossoming Lotus now has vegan soft serve in the Pearl District, but I have yet to go. I'd say move to Portland soon (&Julie and Mishka!), since it's rapidly getting pricier : /

Emily - I've probably said this before, but my favorite cart in Cambridge is the Jerusalem falafel cart on the MIT campus in Kendall -the best and cheapest falafel I have ever had.

I am totally looking forward to my leftovers for lunch.

Julie, it's on.

Jess, everything seems to be getting pricier. I can't believe all that is there, and I am even afraid to visit because I may not come back. But my special Killian is here, so I know I'd never really just leave him. But this is all very tempting...

Looks delicious... and wicked cheap!
I have toyed with the opening a cart downtown... I have a feeling I could clean up big time, but it's hard without a commercial kitchen.. I'd have to go all out and buy something like this.

Hi Jess-
I've been reading your blog every now an then for a month or so - I live in Portland, and I recognize that cart! Excellent stuff.
I'm so happy that there's a new vegan/organic grocery in St John's called Proper Eats, now I don't have to go to Interstate for my vegis!

Wow! What a deal!

We have a new Indian place in our small town right now. For some reason we always seem to be able to get dinner for 3 (3 veggie dishes, 3 chapoti, 3 samosas, and rice) for $20!!!!!

Isn't it great when you can get good food cheap!
